Subgenus Clanculus de Montfort, 1810 View in CoL

Type species. Trochus pharaonius Linnaeus, 1758 View in CoL , OD (de Montfort 1810: 191). Present-day, Red Sea .

Diagnosis. Low trochiform shells with regularly convex teleoconch whorls and impressed suture; denticulate aperture, basal columella tooth compound, parietal ridges usually strong. Sculpture consisting of beaded spiral cords; umbilicus deep ( Herbert 1993).

Remarks. Clanculus appears already during the middle Eocene in the NE Atlantic and is recorded in the Western Tethys during the early Oligocene.
