Guhl (1972 a) published originally this species as Pyxidiella matthesi and transferred into the Orbopyxidiella genus in 1979. Schödel (2018, p. 80) mentions the synonym for this species as ‘ Ampullaster matthesi: Jankowski 1985 ’. The name combination Ampullaster matthesi does not exist. The genus Ampullaster Jankowski, 1976, was proposed for the single species Pyxidium stammeri Lust, 1950, but also in abstracts (Jankowski 1976) and full text is unavailable (personal communication from Dr. Igor Dovgal). Stokes (1887) described this species as Rhabdostyla chaeticola on Nais sp. Marchesini (2015) reported this species as an epibiont on the polychaete species Aeolosoma hemprichi Ehrenberg, 1828. Dias et al.
