Description:—Vines woody. Branches shallowly 8-grooved, glabrous; bracts of axillary floral buds of old branches narrowly triangular to ovate, 4−8 mm long, papery, sparsely puberulous toward apex. Leaves pinnate, 5−7-foliolate, rarely ternate, glabrous; petiole 2−5.5 cm long; leaflet blades of lower pair narrowly ovate, 4−6 (−14) cm long, 3−4.5 cm broad, subleathery, 3-parted or unequally 2-parted, base subcordate, margin entire, apex acute to more or less obtuse; leaf blades of upper pair triangular-linear to narrowly triangular, 2.5−5 cm long, 0.9−2 cm broad, base subcordate to truncate, margin entire and undivided; midvein abaxially more or less prominent. Flowers 2−7, arising from axillary buds, 2.5−4 cm in diameter. Pedicel 4−10.5 cm long, pubescent. Sepals 4−6, white or abaxially tinged pinkish, spreading, broadly oblanceolate to oblong, 1.3−2.2 cm long, 0.4−1 cm broad, abaxially densely appressed puberulous, adaxially glabrous, apex obtuse to rounded. Stamens ca. 8 mm long, glabrous; anthers narrowly oblong, 2−5 mm long, apex obtuse or obscurely apiculate. Ovaries pubescent. Style 5−8 mm long, densely villous. Achenes compressed, ca. 3.5 mm long, ca. 3 mm broad, blackish when mature, pubescent; persistent style white plumose.

Phenology:—Flowering from February to April; fruiting from April to May. A single specimen, J.Q. Xing 16486 (WUK; Fig. 6A), from Danjiangkou (previously known as Junxian) in western Hubei, was recorded to be collected on 24 August 1959 on the field label. The flowering time of the Danjiangkou population of Clematis hastata needs to be verified.

Distribution and habitat:— Clematis hastata is currently known to occur in eastern Chongqing (Chengkou), southern Gansu (Wenxian), western Hubei (Danjiangkou, Zhuxi), southwestern Shaanxi (Hanzhong), and northeastern and northern Sichuan (Guangyuan, Nanjiang, Qingchuan), i.e. the Daba mountains region in central China (Fig. 10). It grows on slopes or cliffs in ravines at altitudes of 300−1400 m.
