I am pleased to name this elegant beetle in honor of Frank Hovore, who was an assiduous student of longicorn beetles, a well traveled general beetle collector, and all around swell guy. Practically any beetle that was not a scarab or a longhorn – including the presently described species - Frank (only somewhat disparagingly) called a ‘‘ grickle. ’’ I would like to think that Frank would be very pleased to have a grickle named in his honor, although knowing him as I did, he might not admit it publicly!	en	Gotoh, Hiroki, Lavine, Laura C. 064F87BEAB4EFFD8FE258BE4ACC012CE.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. This species of Ischyomius is immediately recognizable by its color: dorsal and ventral surface orange-red except for elytral apices and spines, femora, and tibiae piceous to near black. Other diagnostic features include the deeply emarginate tarsomeres (Fig. 3) and the outer apical elytral spine (Fig. 1), which is distinctly longer than the inner apex.	en	Gotoh, Hiroki, Lavine, Laura C. 064F87BEAB4EFFD8FE258BE4ACC012CE.taxon	description	Description. With general characteristics of Ischyomius (see Pollock 1998: 246 – 250), plus the following: TL 8.8 – 10.9 mm; GEW 2.3 – 2.9 mm; body (Fig. 1) elongate (TL / GEW 5 3.6 – 3.8) color uniformly orange-red except for elytral apices, femora and tibiae piceous to nearly black; eyes moderately protuberant; antennae long, antennomeres filiform (especially 3 – 4), from 5 – 10 somewhat shorter; male without pit on mentum; dorsal punctation of head, pronotum and elytra coarse (more so on elytra than forebody), widely spaced, not distinctly setiferous; entire dorsal surface shining, without distinct microsculpture, setation mostly absent, restricted to few short setae along lateral pronotal and elytral margins; pronotum (Fig. 4) wider than long (GPW / PL 1.26 – 1.30); posterior pronotal bead indistinct or absent along entire width; lateral pronotal margin smooth, not distinctly carinate; margins parallel-sided basally, then abruptly widened and parallel sided to indistinctly arcuate to anterior margin; anterolateral angles of pronotum rounded, not angulate; disc of pronotum moderately convex with indistinct posterolateral depressions; elytra distinctly convex, only slightly flattened dorsally, without regular, erect setae; outer apical elytral spine well developed, distinctly longer than inner elytral apex; tarsomeres 2 – 4 on front two pairs of legs, and 2 – 3 on hind leg with deeply emarginate anterior edge (Fig. 3), producing two lobes; ventral tarsal setae adhesive in nature, consisting of dense pad of shorter setae medially, and longer, apically curved setae along outer margins; last tarsomere without modified setae; ventral surface (especially abdominal venter) with nearly isodiametric microsculpture, especially distinct on abdomen; abdominal venter without distinct setation; aedeagus (Fig. 2) relatively stout, apicale slightly longer than basale; apicale broad, only slightly tapered distally; accessory lobes narrow, elongate, extended slightly past end of apicale.	en	Gotoh, Hiroki, Lavine, Laura C. 064F87BEAB4EFFD8FE258BE4ACC012CE.taxon	discussion	Discussion. While I. hovorei exhibits a very distinctive color pattern, it is rather close structurally to I. chevrolati Champion. In comparing the aedeagus of I. hovorei to that of previously described species of the genus however, more similarities were seen between I. hovorei and I. singularis than any other species. In the key to species of Pollock (1998: 251), I. hovorei falls into the group of species with neither a distinct posterior pronotal bead, nor conspicuous vestiture on abdominal ventrites. The key is here emended (from couplet 4) to include the new species (figure references refer to those in Pollock 1998): 4. Anterolateral angles of pronotum produced, square to slightly acute (Fig. 1 C) ................................................. I. denticollis Champion 4 9. Anterolateral angles of pronotum not produced, more or less rounded .... 5 5. Lateral margins of pronotal disc straighter (Fig. 4 A); lateral pronotal bead attaining anterior pronotal margin (Fig. 4 B); lateral margins explanate, flat to slightly concave to lateral edge ............ Ischyomius singularis Chevrolat 5 9. Lateral margins of pronotal disc evenly arcuate (Fig. 4 C); lateral pronotal bead not attaining anterior pronotal margin (Fig. 4 D); lateral margins evenly convex to edge ................................................................... 6 6. Body color uniform, from testaceous to rufous ........................................................................... Ischyomius chevrolati Champion 6 9. Body color orange-red except for elytral apices, femora and tibiae piceous to nearly black ................................. Ischyomius hovorei Pollock, n. sp. 280	en	Gotoh, Hiroki, Lavine, Laura C.
