Zapotecia is characterized by having three gizzards, and therefore presumed to share ancestry with the trigastrid group of genera. However, it is worth noting that Zapotecia differs from the trigastrids (in a strict application of the clade definition) by having holonephridia. This suggests that Zapotecia might share a closer ancestry with Protozapotecia and Diplocardia, and not to the trigastrids. Regardless if Zapotecia shares a closer common ancestor with the trigastrids or Protozapotecia and Diplocardia, all of these genera are considered to be more closely related to each other than to other achantodrilid species (Fragoso & Rojas 2016; James & Davidson 2012). The specific evolutionary history of these genera remains unknown.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/3235FE1ADF39797BB3EBFB60F6D40B89	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This species is only known from its type locality in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and has not been collected on the island ever since. Zapotecia is currently a small genus with only two additional species, both from Mexico (James 1993). Specimens with affinities to Z. keiteli have been reported from Cuba (Rodríguez Aragonés 1999; Rodríguez et al. 2007). Cervantes Olveras (2012) reported a species morphologically similar to Z. keiteli from Veracruz, Mexico. The original description of Z. keiteli is based on a couple of juvenile specimens. Given this, the unusual geographical distance between these records (not seen in any other species within this group) and subtle differences between Michaelsen (1902) and the diagnosis provided by Rodríguez Aragonés (1999) (e.g., body size, presence and absence of typhlosole), there is still the possibility that these records might represent morphologically similar species rather than the same taxon. However, Zisci & Csuzdi (1991) considered Z. keiteli as a junior synonym of Z. amecamecae Eisen, 1900, based on literature review and examination of a single Mexican specimen. We therefore refrain from a taxonomical decision until fresh material from Hispaniola can be obtained and compared with other Zapotecia populations using an integrative approach.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/3235FE1ADF39797CB3EBF9FCF13C0C74	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The genus Eutrigaster was erected to accommodate E. oraedivitis Cognetti de Martiis, 1904 based on the presence of three gizzards in an otherwise benhamiid earthworm. However, the structure that Cognetti de Martiis (1904) thought to be the first gizzard is in reality an enlarged semi-muscular proventriculus (Sherlock et al. 2011). Sims (1987) expanded the genus to include Neotropical dichogasterid species without penial setae and later, Csuzdi & Zisci (1991) revised Eutrigaster and redefined it to species with a semi-muscular enlarged proventriculus in segment 5, and two gizzards in segments 6–7. Csuzdi & Zicsi (1991) divided the genus into two subgenera for species with ( Graffiona Csuzdi, 2014) or without penial setae ( Eutrigaster). The classification suggested by Csuzdi & Zicsi (1991) transferred most Neotropical Dichogaster to Eutrigaster, with a few species still retaining their position within Dichogaster . Therefore, the only distinguishing characteristics between Eutrigaster and the predominantly African Dichogaster are that the latter lacks an enlarged proventriculus, and its gizzards are located in segments 5–6. However, several authors disagree with the validity of Eutrigaster as currently described (e.g., Fragoso & Reynolds 1997; James 1996, 2004; James & Gamiette, 2016). Firstly, the location of the gizzards is frequently variable in the literature and is very difficult to accurately determine as septae in this region are extremely thin and can break without leaving evident traces (Fragoso & Reynolds 1997). Secondly, the degree of enlargement and musculature of the proventriculus seems to be a function of body size rather than evolutionary history (James 1996). Interestingly, the Neotropical Dichogaster-Eutrigaster species seem to be unrelated to the Pantropical Dichogaster clades based on molecular phylogenetic inferences (Anderson et al. 2017). Here, we keep the Hispaniolan native dichogasterid species in Eutrigaster for consistency purposes, but recognizing that a revision of this group is needed and that changes in the current classification of both Eutrigaster and Dichogaster and their subgenera are likely to occur through the application of phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/3235FE1ADF3E797DB3EBF8B0F6EE0D78	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This species is only known from its type locality. Reynolds & Reynolds (2001), in their review of the Hispaniolan earthworms, provided an interpretation of the type locality for T. dominicana . This new locality corresponded to “ Santo Domingo (Distrito Nacional),” which seems to be erronous as Gates (1957) specified that the type material, on which the original description of the species was based, came from “ San Cristobal, Santo Domingo.” It is very likely that the original label referenced by Gates (1957) was refering to San Cristóbal City, which was anexed to Santo Domingo province by 1930 (year when the type material was collected), from the Dominican Republic. In 1935 the province San Cristóbal was established, and based on this we assume that the type locality of T. dominicana refers to the western mountainous areas of San Cristóbal City, capital of the San Cristóbal province.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/3235FE1ADF337971B3EBFC09F435085C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
