Folsomia wanxianesis , sp. nov.

Figs 1–17, Tab.1

Type material. Holotype: female, China: Chongqing: Wanxian, Lihua Village, 252m alt., under stones in the village, 6.ix.1998, collection number C8639, coll. Meng Wen-xin et al. Paratypes: 3 females and 1 male, the same data as holotype. Deposited in the Department of Biology, Nanjing University.

Description. Body length. Up to 0.62mm. Color. Background color white. Head and body with very scattered blue pigment along sides, pigment on Abd. IV–VI relatively dense.

Head. Ommatidia absent. Postantennal organ (PAO) narrow, 0.68–0.74 times as width of Ant. I base, without inner denticles, with 6 guard setae (Fig. 1). Labral setal formula as 4 / 5, 5, 4 (Fig. 2). Labium with 4+4 basomedian setae, 3+3 proximal setae, 5+5 basolateral and 4+4 postlabial setae (Fig. 3). Ant. I with 2 dorsal basal microsensilla (ms) and 2 ventral sensilla (s), one s larger and more translucent. Ant. II with 1 dorsal, 1 ventral and 1 lateral basal ms and 1 apical lateral translucent s. Ant. III with 1 basal ms and 1 lateral s; antennal organ (AO) consisting of 2 inner s, 2 outer s, inner ones finger-like (Figs 4 a, b). Except common setae, Ant. IV with 39–46 s of different sizes, all translucent, 6 of them apparently thicker than others (Figs 5). Sensilla thinnerwalled and translucent usually slender than common setae.

Body chaetotaxy. Macroseta (Mac) larger than common seta. Sensillum (s) slightly shorter, more translucent and slender than common seta (c). Microsensillum (ms) thick-walled and smaller than s. Mac formula as 1, 1 / 3, 3, 3, 4; largest ones on last 3 abdominal segments 3.4-4.0 times as length of mucro. Sensillar formulae as 4, 3 / 2, 2, 2, 3 (s) and 1, 0 / 0, 0, 0 (ms) (Fig. 6). Sensilla probably present on Abd.V, but hardly distinguishable. Medial s on Th. II–Abd. III well in front of posterior row of dorsal setae (p-row); those on Abd. I–III situated between Mac 1 and Mac 2, and much closer to Mac 2. Corner sensillum (cors) located in p-row on Th. II–III (Fig. 7). Lateral sensillum located in p-row on Abd. I and in front of p-row on Abd. II–III (Figs. 8 & 9). The leaf-shaped sensilla on Abd. IV–VI are absent. Common setae along median line on each side (Axial setae–ax) of Th. II–Abd. III as 9, 7(6) / 4, 4, 4. Thorax without ventral setae.

Appendages. Unguis and unguiculus toothless. Tibiotarsal setae arranged in 3 rings, each with 7 setae on leg I–II (Figs 10, 11); and 25–28 setae on leg III probably in 4 rings (Fig. 12). Ventral tube with 4+4 laterodistal (Fig. 13) and 6 posterior setae. Retinaculum with 4 teeth on each ramus and 1 seta on corpus (Fig. 14). Anterior and posterior parts of furcal subcoxa respectively with 5–6 and 3 setae (Fig. 15). Manubrium anteriorly with 3+3 setae in 2 longitudinal rows (Fig. 16); posteriorly with 4+4 latero-basal, 3+3 central, 2+2 distal, and 1+1 apical (Fig. 17); laterally with 1+1 setae (Fig. 16). Dens anteriorly with 10–11, posteriorly with 2 basal and 2 medial setae (Figs 16, 17). Mucro with 2 teeth, subapical one larger than apical (Figs 16, 17). Length ratio of manubrium: dens: mucro as 5.4-6.9:6.3-7.1:1.

Etymology. The new species is named after Wanxian, the type locality.

Discussion. The new species, Folsomia wanxianensis , belongs to the quadrioculata -group and shares some characters with the Eastern Carpathian species F. albens Kaprus’ & Potapov 1999 in group, such as the absence of ommatidia, sensilla and microsensilla formulae of Th. II–Abd. III respectively as 4, 3 / 2, 2, 2, 3 (s) and 1, 0 / 0, 0, 0 (ms), 6 setae present on posterior side of ventral tube, and small body size. However, it could be easily distinguished from the latter by the laterodistal setae on ventral tube and setae on furca. The differences of the new species from other members of the quadrioculata- group are shown in table 1.
