Occurrence in Surinam is based on the record by Jeekel (1952) that was overlooked by Shelley & Kiser (2000), who also missed the account by Brölemann (1909) and obscure records from Colombia (Attems 1900, 1903), Venezuela (Daday 1891), Guyana (Chamberlin 1944, cited as S. galapagoensis Bollman 1889), & Trinidad (Daday 1891). Bücherl (1942 a) cited S. gigantea from Goias & Alagoas Edos., Brazil, but these records need confirmation. There is one preserved specimen each from Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, & St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands, that Shelley & Kiser concluded represent accidental human importations or labelling errors. Maps: Shelley & Kiser (2000, figs. 6–7).

Remarks: The oldest name for a species of Scolopendra in the New or Old Worlds, and thus holding taxonomic priority over all other names, S. gigantea was accorded a modern diagnosis by Shelley & Kiser (2000:161–165) to establish its identity and stabilize binomials in the Scolopendridae . The name was proposed for an illustration and short verbal account of a largebodied species found on the wharves of Kingston, Jamaica (Browne 1756), but there is no evidence that a type specimen ever existed.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/EF367556FFD7F618FEAC346DFB79F978	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Koch 1983, Khanna 2001, Shelley et al. 2005); its sporadic occurrence in the New World undoubtedly reflects human introductions. According to Shelley (2002) and Shelley et al. (2005), S. morsitans occurs on Anguilla, Antigua, Bahamas (Eleuthera, Exuma, New Providence), Barbuda, Cayman Islands (Grand & Little Cayman), Curaçao, Dominica, Grenadines (Bequia), Guadeloupe, Hispaniola (Haiti, Dominican Republic), Jamaica, Marie Galante, Martinique, Montserrat, Nevis, St. Barthélemy, St. Kitts, St. Vincent, Tobago, Turks and Caicos (Grand Turk, South & West Caicos), Puerto Rico, & the US Virgin Islands (St. Croix & St. Thomas). On the continental land mass, the centipede has been encountered in the US (Florida); Mexico (Baja California Sur, Colima, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Yucátan), Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia (Casanare, Cordoba), Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru (Huanuco, La Libertad, Loreto, San Martinj), Brazil (Amazonas, Bahia, Goias, Mato Grosso, Pará, Paraiba, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo), Paraguay, & Argentina (Brölemann 1901, 1902 a, b, 1903, 1909; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1939, 1942 a, 1950, 1974; Jeekel 1952; Shelley 2002; Shelley et al. 2005). Scolopendra alternans is common in the Caribbean and is known from the Bahamas (Andros, Bimini, Cat, Exuma, Little Inagua, New Providence, Salt and Rum Cays, & San Salvador), Cuba, Hispaniola (both the Dominican Republic & Haiti), Puerto Rico, U. S. Virgin Islands ( St. John, St. Thomas, & St. Croix), British Virgin Islands (Caiba, Guana, Pete’s I., Sombrero I., & Tortola), St. Barthélemy, St. Eustaceus, St. Kitts, Saba, Barbuda, Antigua, Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Lucia, & Trinidad (references summarized in Shelley (2002)). In South America, it has been recorded from Venezuela & Brazil (Shelley 2002), and while the northern coast of Venezuela is plausible for S. alternans, its occurrence in Brazil requires corroboration. Map: Shelley (2002, fig. 49 in part, occurrence in the continental US).

Remarks: Scolopendra alternans is the only indigenous species of Scolopendra in the New World that lacks the anterior transverse sulcus on the 1st tergite, a characteristic of Old World species. It has always been credited to Leach, 1813, in vol. 7 of the Edinburgh Encyclopedia, which is the citation provided by Leach (1815). I (Shelley 2002) gave 1813 as the publication date but could not provide a page because that volume of the Encyclopedia is not available in the US. Through the courtesy of my colleague A. Minelli, I have finally seen a copy of this work, and S. alternans is not mentioned therein. The actual publication date therefore reverts to 1815, where Leach named this species and provided a descriptive sentence in the account immediately preceding that of S. subspinipes .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/EF367556FFD6F61AFEAC369DFBB9FC5F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The specimens do not correspond to any species of Scolopendra known to occur either in Venezuela or along the northern coast of South America. They clearly are not representatives of S. gigantea because they lack several features, particularly the dorsoapical spines on the ambulatory prefemora and femora (Shelley & Kiser 2000), nor do they correspond to the original descriptions of either S. angulata or S. viridicornis; they also do not key out to any species in Bücherl’s (1939) key to Neotropical species of Scolopendra . A past worker placed a label in the jar stating, “ Scolopendra heros Girard,” and they correspond closely to this central North American species as rediagnosed by Shelley (2002); the flanges on the telopodal articles of the second maxillae (termed “palpal flanges” by Shelley (2002)) are particularly evident. I therefore place Scolopendra punctiscuta Wood, 1861, in synonymy under S. heros Girard, 1853, and surmise that the specimens were either a transient introduction in Venezuela, unlikely in the mid1800s, or that the locality represents a mislabeling. Efforts to trace information on the collector, W. G. Boulton, to determine if he had been in the range of S. heros, were unsuccessful. Scolopendra punctiscuta was omitted by Bücherl (1974).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/EF367556FFC3F60DFEAC307DFCE7FF77	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Bücherl (1939, 1942 a) placed cristata sensu Porat in synonymy under S. viridicornis but did not acknowledge the fact that the name is truly attributable to Newport (1844). Thus cristata has been misassigned to a New World species that is surely different from what Newport originally intended, and I include it in this list even though it properly applies to a form in China. The holotype conforms to S. polymorpha as defined by Shelley (2002) — the transition from sparsely to densely hirsute antennomeres occurs at article 11, the anterior transverse sulcus on T1 and the middorsal suture on T21 are present, and there are 4/4 spines on the prefemoral processes of the ultimate legs; the specimen is rather large, but not beyond what I have seen for this species. However, Shelley (2002) deleted all records of S. polymorpha from south of Guerrero, Mexico, including that from Brazil, which is based on this holotype. As Kohlrausch (1878) also proposed S. pachypus, a synonym of S. polymorpha, from California, where it is the only indigenous scolopendrid, perhaps he mislabeled a specimen from the sample containing S. pachypus as being from Brazil. Whatever the explanation, South America is wholly implausible for S. polymorpha, and there is no evidence that the species is established in Brazil, as I know of no other specimen from the country.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/EF367556FFC0F60FFEAC31DDFC94FA70	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. However, H. marginata does not occur in Kansas and is known from only two localities in Oklahoma, the closer being Edmond, Oklahoma Co., a previously unreported site around 125 mi (200 km) southsoutheast of Medicine Bow. The paratype, from an unspecified site in Colombia, is a juvenile of S. gigantea L., 1758, which does not occur at or near Monterey (Shelley & Kiser 2000) .

Original rank: species. Current rank and status: valid species, by present reelevation. Attems (1930) and Bücherl (1942 a) considered S. robusta as a full species.

Anatomical illustrations: none.

Distribution: type locality; as the paratype cannot be conspecific with the former holotype, I delete Colombia from the distribution. Maps: none.

Remarks: Sandefer (1998) unintentionally reduced S. robusta to subspecific status under S. gigantea in a popularized booklet on centipede husbandry. It was merely a guess as evidenced by the statement, “Perhaps S. robusta is nothing more than a subspecies of S. gigantea and will be listed as Scolopendra gigantea robusta throughout this publication and until future studies indicate differently.” The document was printed so as to assure obtainable and identical copies, and it lacked a disclaimer that it was not issued for public and permanent scientific record (Article 8.2 of the Code). Consequently, I believe this booklet satisfies Article 8.1 of the “Code” such that the trinomial Scolopendra gigantea robusta constituted an official elevation in rank even though unintentional. Scolopendra gigantea does not occur north of Colombia on the continental land mass (Shelley & Kiser 2000), and there is no scientific basis to link it with S. robusta . I therefore return S. robusta to full specific status, where it was recognized by Bücherl (1939, 1942 a). I have examined the paratype twice, but because it is a juvenile, anatomical features are not fully developed. The specimen has an anterior transverse sulcus on T1 and small flanges on the telopodal articles of the second maxillae, thus conforming to S. heros Girard, 1853, a plausible inhabitant of Monterey; however, it differs from S. heros in having small spines dorsally on the ambulatory prefemora. An adult topotype, to be designated the neotype, is needed from the vicinity of Monterey to determine whether S. robusta is a valid species or a synonym of an older name. It was omitted by Bücherl (1974)

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/EF367556FFCAF605FEAC34B7FB3CFB37	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. Consequently, a most confusing situation is created because the name, michoacana, was proposed at different ranks by the same author for specimens collected by the same person at the same locality only one year apart! Scolopendra pomacea michoacana Chamberlin, 1942, is thus a junior primary homonym of S. michoacana Chamberlin, 1941, which holds priority; it was also omitted by Bücherl (1974).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/EF367556FFCFF600FEAC31BFFE50FB87	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Bücherl (1942 b) provided a detailed anatomical description of a supposedly new, nominate subspecies of S. angulata, which he erected for 9 specimens from Tapirapé; later that year, he (Bücherl 1942 a) provided a second and brief account of the same “ Scolopendra angulata angulata, n. subsp. ” Apparently, he then realized that the nominate subspecies of any species automatically is that of the original author, in this case Newport (1844); consequently, he (Bücherl 1943) proposed “ S. a. moojeni Bücherl, 1941,” in a short narrative for these same individuals as a replacement name for “ S. a. angulata n. subsp. ” However, as S. a. angulata can only be authored by Newport (1844), S. a. moojeni Bücherl must be dated 1943 instead of 1941, as there is no provision for “retroactive dating” in the Code. Subsequently, Bücherl (1974) and Chagas (2000) also incorrectly attributed S. a. moojeni to Bücherl (1941) rather than (1943). Exacerbating this confusion is the fact that both of the “1941" works are misdated and were actually published in 1942, as is clearly shown by the concluding statements “Entregue para publicação em 14 de janeiro de 1941 edado à publicidade em janeiro de 1942" (Bücherl 1942 b) and “Entregue para publicação em junho de 1941 e dado à publicidade em janeiro de 1942" (Bücherl 1942 a)! To the best of my knowledge, this tangle has not previously been unraveled.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/EF367556FFCEF601FEAC373FFCC0F8BF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
