Newsteadia França, 1919: 148 (as subgenus of Phlebotomus). Type species: Hebotomus [sic] minutus Rondani, 1843 by designation of França (1920: 234) [junior homonym of Newsteadia Green, 1902].

Prophlebotomus França & Parrot, 1921: 281. Type species: Hebotomus [sic] minutus Rondani, 1843 by designation of Parrot (1934: 391) [junior synonym of Sergentomyia França & Parrot].

Sergentomyia includes more than half of the described phlebotomine fauna in the eastern hemisphere, approximately 280 species. As noted by Seccombe et al. (1993), Sergentomyia species usually feed on ectothermic vertebrates, but some species (e.g. S. gomboki) are known to take bloodmeals form mammals, including humans.
