Lectotype (designated here):— MEXICO. Oaxaca: Rancho de Calderón, 5500 ft, 13 August 1894, L.C. Smith 181 (GH barcode 00021919!; isolectotype MEXU barcode MEXU00018091 !).
This attractive shrub is restricted to southern Mexico, and four collections from the state of Oaxaca were cited in the protologue: Nelson 1880, Pringle 4903, Smith 181, and Smith 182. Standley (1923) in his monumental treatment Trees and Shrubs of Mexico indicates the “type from Rancho de Calderón, Oaxaca ” without mentioning a specimen or herbarium. This locality corresponds to the collection site of Smith 181, and the specimen at GH is here selected as the lectotype.
