Specimen examined (total 2 specimens). Lectotype (designated herein): male (MNHN), “ Assam plains”/ “Ex-Musaeo, H.W. Bates, 1892 ”/ “Museum Paris, coll. R. Oberthür, 1952”/ “ Chlaenius eneides Bates ” . Paralectotype: 1 female (MNHN), “ Assam plains’’ / “Ex-Musaeo, H.W. Bates, 1892 ’’ / “Museum Paris, coll. R. Oberthür, 1952” .
Measurements. BL = 14.2 mm (lectotype), 15.6 mm (paralectotype), HW = 2.3 mm, 2.6 mm, EYL = 0.9 mm, 1.0 mm, PL = 3.0 mm, 3.5 mm, PW = 3.4 mm, 3.7 mm, EL = 8.3 mm, 9.2 mm, EW = 4.8 mm, 5.8 mm, PL/PW = 1.10, 1.06, EL/EW = 1.73, 1.59, EW/PW = 1.45, 1.57.
Description. Head and pronotum black, with distinct green metallic shine; elytra black; ventral surface black, with metallic shine; coxae, trochanters, tibiae, antennomeres 2 and 3 black or dark brown; antennomeres 1 and 4−11, mandibles, palpi and tarsi reddish brown; femora yellow in the middle portion, black at base and apex, basal black areas on hind femora longer than hind trochanters.
Head convex; vertex and occiput finely punctate; genae glabrous, oblique, as long as one-fifth of eyes; lateral margin of mentum straight. Pronotum (Fig. 24) ovoid, widest in the middle; lateral margins slightly bordered, sinuate before posterior angles; disc punctate, median line distinct, base punctate; basal foveae deep, coarsely punctate. Elytra moderately convex, widest in or slightly behind the middle; intervals (Fig. 30) convex, glabrous medially, with sparse pubescence at each lateral side; yellow spot behind the middle of each elytron, covering intervals 4−8. Proepisterna very sparsely punctate. Claws (Fig. 36) curved, with 4−7 long teeth. Aedeagus (Figs. 46, 47) thin in lateral view. Gonostylus (Fig. 51) with four long spines on outer margin.
Remarks. Bates (1892: 310) gave a very brief description of C. eneides . We redescribe this species herein to aid the determination.
According to the original description, C. eneides was described on a male and a female (Bates 1892: 310), without fixing the name-bearing type. In the collection of MNHN, two syntypes were found collected from the same localities and bearing Bates' determining label. Hence, the male deposited in MNHN is designated as the lectotype herein, for fixing the name to a single specimen and to avoid confusion about the type.
C. eneides is similar with C. schillhammeri in having elytral spots slightly behind the middle and femora bicolored, but differs from the latter by pronotal lateral margin sinuate before posterior angle in contrast to lateral margin straight before posterior angle in C. schillhammeri .
