Maruina (Aculcina) cirrata sp. nov.
Figs. 1–6
Diagnosis. Vertex 0.4 times the length of the head. Eye bridge with 3 facet rows, separated by the distance of one facet diameter; interocular suture T-shaped. Wing with R3 not connected to R2. CuA2 not reaching the wing apex. Hypandrium unsclerotized, stripe like, narrow. Aedeagus helical-shaped (curled).
Description. Adult male. Head (Fig. 1): Vertex 0.4 times the length of the head; vertex scar with a glabrous central area; eyes separated by the distance of one facet diameter; eye bridge with 3 facet rows; interocular suture T-shaped; frontal scar patch concentrated at the ventral half. Antenna (Fig. 2): scape subcylindrical, approximately the same length of pedicel; pedicel subspherical; flagellum with 13 flagellomeres, all barrel-shaped; a pair of short, single filamented ascoids are presented in flagellomeres 6, 7 and following; apiculus absent on flagellomere 13. Palpus formula = 1.0:1.5:1.8:3.5 (Fig. 1). Wing (Fig. 3): lanceolate, Sc short, not reaching C; R3 not connected to R2; R5 attached to Rs and ending near tip but not reaching C; M2 not connected to M1; CuA2 not connected to CuA1; CuA2 not reaching C. Terminalia (Figs. 4–6): hypandrium unsclerotized, stripe like, narrow (Fig. 4); gonocoxites longer than wide (Fig. 4); gonostylus approximately as long as gonocoxite, with base wider than apex (Fig. 4); ejaculatory apodeme 1.5 times longer than gonocoxite, pyriform, wider anteriorly (Fig. 4). Aedeagus symmetrical, bifid, curled (helical-shaped) (Fig. 4); aedeagal spines lacking. Parameral sheath present, conical (Fig. 4), laterally articulated to gonocoxal apodemes (Fig. 6). Epandrium narrow, curved, inverted U-shaped (Fig. 5); subepandrial sclerite extremely thin, Y-shaped, distal arms longer than unique basal arm; hypoproct micropilose, with posterior margin convex (Fig. 5); epiproct smaller than hypoproct, triangular with long marginal bristles; cerci digitiform, 2.2 times the length of gonostylus with one apical tenaculum (Fig. 5).
Female. Unknown.
Distribution. Known only from the type locality.
Type material. Holotype: 1♂, BRAZIL, Bahia, Santa Terezinha, Serra da Jibóia, 12°51′S 39°28′W, 800 masl, ex. Malaise trap, 8.VIII–28.IX.2009, Calor, A. & Lecci, L. cols. (MZFS) . Paratypes: 1 ♂, same data as holotype (MZFS); 1 ♂, same data as holotype (BMNH) .
Etymology. The species is named with the Latin adjective cirratus, referring to the curled aedeagus.
Remarks. The aedeagus without spines is observed in only three species of Maruina (Aculcina), M. chiringa, M. guria and M. cirrata sp. nov. However, the aedeagus of the new species M. cirrata is unique among these species as it is curled, not straight as in the other two species.
