TYPE SPECIES: Arvicola melanogaster Milne-Edwards, 1871 .

SYNONYMS: Anteliomys, Aschizomys, Caryomys .

COMMENTS: Revised by Corbet (1978c), who also included Phaulomys (a genus we separate from Eothenomys) and Aschizomys (which we include in Alticola). Eothenomys is closely related to Hyperacrius, Alticola, and Clethrionomys, all of which are usually placed in the Clethrionomyini (Gromov and Polyakov, 1977; Hooper and Hart, 1962; Koenigswald, 1980).
