TYPE LOCALITY: Indonesia, Kepulauan Mentawai, Pulau Pagai Selattan (S Pagai Isl), off coast W Sumatra .

DISTRIBUTION: Endemic to islands of South Pagai, North Pagai, Sipora, and Siberut in Mentawai Archipelago.

COMMENTS: Usually listed as a subspecies of M. surifer (Chasen, 1940), but treated as a species by Musser et al. (1979). Closest phylogenetic relative is probably M. surifer . Part of the rodent fauna endemic to Mentawi Archipelago (see account of Leopoldamys siporanus).
