TYPE LOCALITY: Australia, Queensland, Darling Downs, Oakey Creek .
DISTRIBUTION: Australia; modern range along the eastern coast from Townsville in N Queensland to Sydney area in New South Wales; subfossil specimens from farther south in New South Wales (Mahoney and Posamentier, 1975) and from S Victoria (see map in Watts and Aslin, 1981:180).
SYNONYMS: ultra.
COMMENTS: Phylogenetically closely related to P. nanus, an estimate based on spermatozoal morphology (Breed, 1983), electrophoretic data (Baverstock et al., 1977 a, 1981), and morphology of skin, skull, and teeth (Watts and Aslin, 1981).
