TYPE SPECIES: Uranomys ruddi Dollman, 1909 .

COMMENTS: Allen (1939) listed seven species of Uranomys but noted that six of them would probably prove to be subspecies of U. ruddi, which is how the genus is currently treated (Verheyen, 1964b). In external, cranial, and dental traits, Uranomys is closely related to Acomys (Hinton, 1921; Misonne, 1969), a phylogenetic alliance also supported by DNA (LINE) sequence analyses (Pascale et al., 1990), and Lophuromys (our studies; Watts, in litt.; Denys and Michaux, 1992).
