TYPE LOCALITY: China, Kansu .
DISTRIBUTION: Dry grasslands from Gansu, Ningxia (Qin, 1991) through Hupeh and Anhui to Sichuan (China).
SYNONYMS: baileyi, cansus, fontanus, kukunoriensis, rufescens, shenseius.
COMMENTS: Phylogenetically in same monophyletic group as M. smithii and M. rothschildi, which is the most derived group within the subfamily (Lawrence, 1991). Fan and Shi (1982) recognized cansus and baileyi as species, but Li and Chen (1989) argued for their recognition as subspecies of M. fontanierii .
