DISTRIBUTION: Pacific coastal plain and contiguous Andean foothills of W Ecuador and NW Peru.
SYNONYMS: chonensis, lonnbergi, puna, simonsi.
COMMENTS: Lumped under S. hispidus by Cabrera (1961) following the footnoted opinion of Hershkovitz (1955a); reinstated as a species by Voss (1992).
