Subgenus Scatopsciara Edwards, 1927 s . str.

Literature: Tuomikoski (1960): 150–156; Mohrig et al. (1990): 17–20; Menzel & Mohrig (2000): 480–508.

The subgenus Scatopsciara s. str. is divided into the Sc. vitripennis group and the Sc. atomaria group (Menzel & Mohrig 2000: 483–487). The main differences are the broad apex of the gonostylus with a stout apical tooth and a dense group of subapical spines in the apical third. Tibiae of the middle and hind legs show two spurs generally, one of them is distinctly shorter or strongly reduced ( vitripennis group). The gonostylus of species of the Sc. atomaria group taper towards the apex and have a rather long apical tooth. Subapical spines are located either around the tooth base or row-like at the inner side of the gonostylus. Tibiae of middle and/or hind legs have one spur only.
