Phalaena quercifolia Linnaeus, 1758, Syst. Nat. (Ed. 10) 1: TL: not stated [Europa]. Types: (LSL). Range: Distribution (Map 30): Europe through Siberia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and far eastern Russia to Korea, China and Northern Vietnam; Caucasus, Transcaucasus, Turkey. - In Iran: East Azerbaijan province. Bionomics. The species is univoltine throughout its range. Flight period July to August, in Iran from late August to November. Inhabits high altitudes of mountain ranges (1500 m). Larvae are polyphagous and recorded elsewhere from Quercus (Fagaceae), Populus nigra (Salicaceae), Rosa, Malus, Spiraea, Prunus, Cerasus (Rosaceae), but the host plants in Iran are unknown. Pupation in silky cocoon between leaves and on bark. Middle instar larvae hibernate. The species is first noted here from Iran, the southeasternmost point of its distribution.
