Özuluğ & Freyhof (2007) distinguished A. battalgilae from

A. attalus

by having the anal-fin origin ½ scales behind the dorsal-fin base in individuals larger than 90 mm SL (vs. below dorsal-fin rays 7–8), 4 scale rows on the caudalfin base (vs. 3), 3 scale rows between the pelvic-fin origin and the lateral line (vs. 4), and a more slender body (body depth at dorsal 19–23% SL vs. 21–25, Table. 1). In individuals of both population groups larger than 90 mm SL, the anal-fin origin is situated below the dorsal-fin ray 7–8th or ½ scale behind the dorsal-fin base. In individuals smaller than 90 mm SL, the anal-fin origin is situated below the dorsal-fin ray 8th or 1–2.5 scales behind the dorsal-fin base. No difference between both population groups could be found and the differences originally proposed by Özuluğ & Freyhof (2007) could not be confirmed. This character is obviously much more variable than believed before. Also, we found no difference in the number of scale rows on the caudal-fin base (3–4 in A. battalgilae, vs. 3–4 in A. attalus), and between the pelvic-fin origin and the lateral line (3–4 in A. battalgilae, vs. 3–4 in A. attalus). Also, we found no difference in the body depth (body depth at dorsal-fin origin 19–23% SL, vs. 21–25, Table 1). Taking also the absence of differences in the molecular characters studied by Geiger et al. (2014), Mangıt & Yerli (2018) and Bektaş et al. (2020) into account, we treat A. attalus and A. battalgilae as conspecific.

As both species have been described in the same study by Özuluğ & Freyhof (2007), a First Reviser action is needed. The First Reviser action is the principle that in cases of conflicts between simultaneously published names, the first subsequent author can decide which has precedence (ICZN 1999: Article 24.2). As First Revisers, we give precedence of A. attalus over A. battalgilae .
