Material examined. AUSTRALIA, QUEENSLAND: MTQ W13969 (1 female cl. 29.0 mm, pcl 24.3 mm), Eastern Plateau (south of Eastern Field), 10°31.86’S, 145°37.67’E, 1172– 1140 m, beam trawl, 12 Feb. 1992 ( CIDARIS III stn 9-2), coll. Pichon, Birtles & Arnold.
Type locality. West of Sumatra, 1280 m.
Remarks. The single female M. hirsutissima collected by the CIDARIS III expedition constitutes the first record of the species from Australia. Distinguishing characters of this species include the lack of an outer orbital spine on the frontal margin, coarse granulate lateral margin of the carapace and the slender rostrum with rounded apex. The specimen carries a rhizocephalan externa beneath the abdomen.
Distribution. West of Sumatra, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Tonga, and now from northeastern Australia; 495– 1280 m (Baba et al. 2009).
