Type species: Chironomus virescens Meigen, 1818: 23; by designation of Harnisch (1923: 304).

Male diagnosis: As in Cranston et al. (1989) with the following corrections: Antennal ratio 1.8–3.0; wing length 1.2–2.5 mm.

Ecology: The larvae of Cladopelma are found in sandy and muddy substrata in lakes and rivers.
