TYPE SPECIES: Phascogale crassicaudata Gould, 1844 .
SYNONYMS: Antechinomys, Podabrus .
COMMENTS: Includes Antechinomys as a subgenus; formerly considered a valid genus by Archer (1977), but considered a subgenus by Archer (1979:329); see also Kirsch and Calaby (1977:15). On the basis of other anatomic and isozymic data, Lidicker (1983: 1317) considered Antechinomys a distinct genus, despite similarity in dental morphology with Sminthopsis . An additional undescribed species has been reported from S New Guinea and N Australia; see Archer (in Tyler, 1979) and Waithman (1979). Revised by Archer (1981). Original name Podabrus, Gould, 1845, is preoccupied.
