Records from Indonesia. Maluku Sea, Halmahera Sea (Hansen 1910), Seram Sea, Celebes Sea (Fage 1941), northern part of Kei Besar Island, between Kei Kecil and Kei Besar Island, and eastern and southern parts of Jamdena Island, Arafura Sea (Casanova 1996). Depth range: 230–4940 m.
Remarks. Gnathophausia elegans can be recognized by two main characteristics: the ventrolateral keels on the carapace extend post-dorsally and merge into the marginal keels, and the sixth abdominal pleura is armed with a posterior ventral spine (Meland & Aas 2013).
