3 The oribatid mite family-group name Cepheidae (Cepheoidea) has been used for decades in an unambiguous concept, but it is a junior homonym. In 2014 we attempted to follow a then-current solution by applying the name Compactozetidae to this family and the name Eutegaeoidea to the superfamily that then included Compactozetidae and Eutegaeidae . This solution was unsatisfactory for several reasons, as explained by Halliday & Norton (2019), whose request to remove homonomy by a change in spelling to Cepheusidae has been approved (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 2023). We tentatively retain the classification of Cepheusidae (as Cepheidae) and Eutegaeidae used in 2014; Colloff (2023) proposed significant changes, but we had insufficient time to evaluate them.
