Phaenops lecontei (Obenberger, 1928)
(Figs. 3, 4)
Melanophila lecontei Obenberger, 1928: 210 .
Melanophila arcuata Fall, 1932: 83 .
Melanophila caseyi Obenberger, 1944: 321 syn. nov.
The unique male holotype of M. caseyi, 9 mm long by 3.5 mm wide (Figs. 3, 4), is labeled as follows: “California [h] // TYPUS [red, p, framed] // Melanophila caseyi m. Type [h], Det. D r. Obenberger [p] // Mus. Nat. Pragae Inv. 22080 [p, orange, number handwritten] // Phaenops arcuata (Fall) [h], Typus comparandus A. Cobos det. 1984 [p]". Cobos did not publish this. Nelson et al. (1996) synonymized P. arcuata with P. lecontei . Having found no
significant differences between both species we consider P. caseyi (Obenberger 1944) also to be conspecific with P. lecontei (Obenberger 1928) and a junior synonym.
