REMARKS: Flabellifera was originally proposed by Meigen (1800: 13) without included species and later made unavailable by the suppression of the entire work for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of the I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]). Osten Sacken (1882: 193) was the first subsequent usage of the name Flabellifera after Meigen (1800) where he listed it in synonymy with Ctenophora Meigen, 1803, but did not include any species. Hendel (1908: 45) included four nominal species. The name was made available from Osten Sacken (1882) by action of Coquillett (1910a: 545), who treated the name as valid and designated Tipula atrata Linnaeus, 1758 as its type species. Oosterbroek & Theowald (1992: 59) listed Flabellifera (with author and date as Meigen, 1800) as a synonym of Ctenophora Meigen but listed its type species, Tipula atrata Linnaeus, 1758, under Tanyptera Latreille, 1804 . We follow Sabrosky (1999: 139) in treating Tanyptera as a subgenus of Ctenophora, thus Flabellifera Osten Sacken, 1882 is a junior synonym of Tanyptera Latreille, 1804, n. syn. Latreille (1802: 422) listed “ flabelliferes ” in synonymy with “ Tipula pectinicornis; atrata Lin. ” but its usage there is unavailable because it is a vernacular name.
