Description: Body elongate, stout; up to 60 cm in length, but usually less than 10 cm; head short, broad; snout rounded; lateral line absent, but canals and pores on head presents; pelvic fins generally fused, forming a sucking disc; two separate dorsal fins, the first with 4–8 weak spines, the second with one weak spine and 9–18 rays (Robertson & Allen 2015, Nelson et al. 2016). Distribution: Marine, brackish, or rarely freshwater; most tropical and subtropical areas (Nelson et al. 2016). Nine genera and seventeen species in Nicaraguan freshwaters.
