Type species: Megalopsalis triascuta Forster, 1944 .

Etymology: Gender neuter. From the Latin tres, three, and scutum, shield, to reflect the name originally given to its type species by Forster (1944) and to contrast with the related genus Monoscutum Forster, 1948 .
