The valid type species fixation is that of Thon (1832), who selected Scarabaeus brunneus Linnaeus, 1758, but that nominal species is currently the type species of the genus Serica MacLeay, 1819 . An application to the Commission is necessary to fix Melolontha ruricola Fabricius, 1775 as the type species of Omaloplia to conserve current usage.

Note: Samouelle (1819) incorrectly spelt Omaloplia as “ Amaloplia ” and Stephens (1830) incorrectly spelt Omaloplia as “ Homaloplia ”.
