Gammaropsis atlantica Stebbing, 1888

Type locality: Off St. Vicente, Cape Verde Islands.

Distribution: This species has been reported from tropical Florida (Thomas, 1993; LeCroy, 2000); Belize (Thomas, 1993); eastward to Hawaii, Micronesia (Barnard, 1970), Fiji Island (Myers, 1985); Papua New Guinea (Myers, 1995) and Madagascar (Ledoyer, 1982).

Range extension: In the Gulf of Mexico, Gammaropsis atlantica has been recorded from tropical Florida (Thomas, 1993; LeCroy, 2000) and on the Yucatan shelf at depths between 20 and 40 m (Ortiz, 1979). The presence of this species at CV inlet, extends its geographic distribution along the western Gulf of Mexico coast.

Remarks: This species has a circumtropical distribution among coral rubble (Myers, 1985), on sand/mud bottoms, associated with red algae at depths of 3 ­ 36 m (Myers, 1995), and in shallow water as a component of the littoral epifauna (Barnard, 1970). The salinity and temperature ranges measured at the site where this species was collected ranged from 19 to 27 %o and 28 to 29 °C, respectively.
