General distribution: Northern, southern Italy; Italian, Swiss, Austrian Alps; Southwestern Palaearctic, Nearctic; Mediterranean?
Habitat preferences: xerophilous.
Remarks: Oribatula caliptera Berlese, 1902, known from North and Central Italy, is morphologically very similar. Differences are given in Mahunka (1994a). One specimen (AND-I, body length 325 µm) from the present collection exhibits a protruding nose-like rostrum and slightly projecting pteromorphs, but the cusp and the anterior dorsosejugal margin are protruding anteriad which is characteristic for O. amblyptera .
