Aspidosperma refractum Mart. & Zucc. in Flora 7(1, Beil. 4): 136. 1824.

≡ Macaglia refracta (Mart.) Kuntze, Rev. Gen. 2: 416. 1891.

Lectotype (designated here): — BRAZIL. Bahia: Inter oppidum Caiteté et praedium Maracás, s.d., C.F.P. von Martius s.n. (M [barcode M-0183484 image!]; isolectotypes: M [barcode M-0183483 image!, barcode M-0183485 image!, barcode M-0183486 image!, barcode M-0183487 image!, barcode M-0183488 image!]) .

Notes —The diagnosis of A. refractum presented in “ Flora ” by Martius & Zuccarini (1824) was based on a single collection made by Martius himself, though the indication of the original material (Martius s.n.) was only made later by Martius (1824) in “ Nova Genera et Species Plantarum ”. Since this name was published without a holotype, we selected a specimen possessing a label including information about the collection place as the lectotype of A. refractum (M barcode M-0183484) (ICN article 9.3; Turland et al. 2018).

Woodson (1951) considered A. refractum as a synonym of A. pyrifolium Mart. & Zucc., but Duarte (1970) reestablished the former. We agree with Duarte’s concept because A. refractum presents flowers with triangular calyx lobes (vs. filiform), entirely tomentose ovary (vs. glabrous), and sparsely lenticellate follicles (vs. densely lenticellate) with conspicuous midrib (vs. inconspicuous).
