Type locality. Brazil: Rio San Francisco near Villa Nova in the state of Bahia.
Type material. Lectotype (designated by Naviaux 2008), ♂ in SDEI, labelled: “ Rio S. Francisco / Bahia ” [ochre-tarnished, handwritten] // “ Garbe coll. / Melzer det.” [yellowish, handwritten] // “ Villa Nova / b. Donzeiro ” [ochre-tarnished, handwritten, the last word illegible] // “ Syntypus ” [dark red, printed] // “ Coll W. Horn / DEI, Eberswalde” [printed] // “Lectotype / Phaeoxantha / epipleuralis Horn, 1923 / R. Naviaux dét. 2008” [red, printed] .
Paralectotypes. 1 ♂, 7 ♀♀ in SDEI with same label data and: “leg. Garbe und Melzer” (see also Döbler (1973); only the paralectotypes illustrated here were examined by us.
Differential diagnosis. Phaeoxantha (P.) epipleuralis is obviously morphologically close to P. (P.) nocturna and P. (P.) n. crassipunctata, but it may be distinguished by its differently shaped elytra (Figs 85–86, 95, 97) which are widest below the middle or with outer lateral margins slightly dilated towards apices (as in male LT, Fig. 86); elytral surface is coarsely punctate, but the large punctures are present only on anterior two thirds; almost each puncture on the anterior elytral half is surrounded with a shadowed aura-like circle giving the punctures almost fovea-like appearance (Fig. 96). Body 9.50–11.0 (LT 10.0) mm long, 4.10–4.40 (LT 4.15) mm wide.
Distribution. Phaeoxantha (P.) epipleuralis is known only from the nine type specimens from the type locality.
