Taxonomic notes. Described originally as a species of Geophilus, it was assigned subsequently to either Linotaenia or Scolioplanes, then to Strigamia by Crabill (1953). It was recorded repeatedly, and its validity never questioned. A subspecies Scolioplanes maritimus japonicus was later recognized as a distinct species (see under S. japonica).
Distribution: coasts of northern Europe, from Brittany, through the British Isles, to Scandinavia.
