Distribution in the Balkans. Greece: Peloponnese: Tiryns, Kalamata, Lampiri in Achaia (type locality) (Verhoeff 1900).

World distribution. Endemic to Greece, Peloponnese.

Remarks. Type species of the subgenus Cyphobrachyiulus Verhoeff, 1900, originally described on the basis of the structure of the second leg-pair and promeres. On the basis of the opisthomeres, Attems (1940) placed the species in the subgenus Diaxylus Attems, 1940 . Later Strasser (1967) discussed this topic and accepted Verhoeff’s grouping. M. argolicum has never been collected since its original description. According to Verhoeff (1900) and Strasser (1967) this species lives in coastal habitats of the Peloponnese, while the most similar species, Megaphyllum euphorbiarum (Verhoeff, 1900) and M. digitatum sp. n. inhabit higher regions of the peninsula.
