Megaphyllum creticum (Strasser, 1976)

Chromatoiulus (Italoiulus) margaritatus var. cretica Strasser, 1976: 620 –621, Figs 67–68. Chromatoiulus margaritatus creticus: Ceuca 1992: 426 .

Megaphyllum cretica: Ćurčić et al. 2001: 105; Felesaki et al. 2010: 360. Megaphyllum creticum: Enghoff & Kime 2009 .

Distribution in the Balkans. Greece: Lefka Ori (White Mts.), Crete Island (type locality) (Ćurčiċ et al 2001). World distribution. Endemic to the island of Crete, Greece.

Remarks. Elevation of the variant cretica to species level was discussed in detail by Ćurčiċ et al. (2001). It is a good example of species evolution on islands: a taxon formerly thought to be a variant, but nowadays treated as a separate species from Crete. It represents one of the two Cretan Megaphyllum species. The correct spelling of the species should be creticum according to the rules of ICZN (2000).
