Distribution in the Balkans. Republic of Macedonia: Šar Planina Mt., Ljuboten (type locality) (Makarov et al. 2004); Serbia: Šar Planina Mt., Ljuboten, Kačanik, South Serbia (Makarov et al. 2004).
World distribution. Endemic to the Šar Planina Mt. Region.
Remarks. Although Attems (1940) suggested the species belongs to the subgenus Phauloiulus Attems, 1940, reexamination of type material showed a close relationship with species from the subgenus Italoiulus Attems, 1940, i.e. M. creticum (Strasser, 1976) and M. margaritatum (Fanzago, 1875); also suggested by Mauriès (in litt.).
