Genus Philophylla Rondani

Philophylla is a large genus with nearly 57 described species from Oriental, Afrotropical, Australasian and Palaearctic Regions of the world, most of them having been treated under the genus Myoleja Rondani (Han, 1999b; Norrbom et al., 1999). Philophylla is now placed in a different subtribe ( Trypetina) from Anomoia Walker and Myoleja (Chetostomatina), which differs mainly in female postabdominal characters. It differs from Hoplandromyia (Trypetina) in lacking modified frontal setae in males and infesting fruit rather than mining leaves. Philophylla possesses a pair of strong lateral marginal setae on oviscape, lateral surstylus with broadly flattened anterior lobe and elongate posterior lobe (Han, 1999b). Twenty six species are known from Oriental Region and six from India including the new species described here.
