4. Phyllanthus subemarginatus Müller Argoviensis (1863: 39) .
Lectotype [designated by Webster (2002: 23)]:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: A.C. Vauthier 84 (W0051443!) .
Phyllanthus amoenus Müller Argoviensis (1873: 66–67) . Lectotype [first-step designated by Webster (2002: 23), second-step designated here]:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Serra da Piedade, J.E.B. Warming 1585 (C 10022982!, isolectotypes C 10022983!, G00434984!). Remaining syntype. BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Serra da Piedade, L. Riedel 566 (not found).
Phyllanthus janeirensis Müller Argoviensis (1873: 45) . Lectotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: A.F.M. Glaziou 1467 (BR000005103515!, isolectotypes BR0000005103553!; P00608984!, G00435081!).
Müller Argoviensis (1873) published Phyllanthus amoenus based on Warming 1585 and Riedel 566, both from “Serra de Piedade”, although the herbarium where those collections would be deposited was not mentioned. Webster (2002) indicated Warming 1585 deposited in C as a lectotype. Another specimen from that collection was located in the same herbarium, however, thus making it necessary to proceed to the second lectotypification step. Respecting Webster’s previous decision, we elected the Warming 1585 collection deposited in C (C 10022982; Fig. 5). That specimen is better preserved and complies with the protologue.
Müller Argoviensis (1873) described Phyllanthus janeirensis, and referred to Glaziou 1467 deposited “ in hb. Mart. ” as the type collection. That type collection, however, was not found in the main herbarium of Martius (M), even after an extensive search for the collection by the curator. However, the original collections were found in the BR, G and P. Although G was the main herbarium of Müller Argoviensis, the BR specimens appear to contain annotations in the collector’s own handwriting and are in a better state of preservation. We therefore selected specimen BR (BR0000005103553!; Fig. 6) as better representing the species morphologically by having more branches with leaves and reproductive structures.
