Lactobacillus gallinarum

Lactobacillus gallinarum (gal.li.na'rum. L. gen. pl. n. gallinarum of hens).

Lactobacillus gallinarum produces DL-lactic acid. Acid is producedfrom glucose, mannose, galactose, sucrose, fructose, cellobiose, melibiose and raffinose. No acid formation from arabinose, rhamnose, ribose, trehalose and mannitol. Synonymous with Lactobacillus acidophilus group A4 of Johnson et al. [72]. Strains are tolerant to 4.0 % NaCl [72, 84]. The genome size of the type strain is 1.94 Mbp and the mol% G+C content of DNA is 36.5.
