Megalotomus junceus (Scopoli, 1763)

Alydus limbatus Herrich-Schaeffer, 1835: pl. 12 and legend (syn. Reuter, 1888: 164). Syntypes: Germany (Stuttgart) and Slovenia? (Istria); ZMHB (in part).

Alydus pavidus Gorski, 1852: 131 (syn. Fieber, 1861: 226, with limbatus).

Diagnosis. This species is recognized within the genus Megalotomus by a combination of the following characters: medium-sized, 13.0– 14.5 mm in length, body slender, mostly dark black, anterior margins of forewings yellowish, anterior half of connexivum of abdominal segments IV–VI with a bright yellowish patch on each side; antennal segment IV longer than segments II and III together; posterior angle of pronotum acute and pointed, with sharp apex; surcapsular spines of the genital capsule straight, each one with a broadly triangular process at the outer margin close to base and a series of small serrations on the inner margin of apex; parameres wide and slightly curving, each one with two pointed terminal apices.

Remarks. This is the most widespread species among the genus, and has been recorded in many countries from the Palaearctic region (see above).
