Astraptes augeas sp. nov.
Type locality Costa Rica, Alajuela Prov. Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, Sector Cacao, Sendero Maritza, 10.93644 ° N, 85.47764 ° W, 760 m.
Diagnosis. The species may be differentiated from other members of the Astraptes fulgerator complex by the following combination of character states of the DNA barcode: 121T; 123C; 298T. All of these are unique states for A. augeas with respect to other members of the A. fulgerator complex.
Holotype. Voucher 02-SRNP-23926, deposited at the University of Pennsylvania.
Note: This species corresponds to the OTU ‘LOHAMP’ of Hebert et al. (2004).
Etymology. The name augeas is a noun in apposition. In Greek mythology, Augeas of Elis was the owner of the stables that comprised Heracles’ Fifth Labour. The name recognizes the enormous throughput of the ACG barcoding endeavour and the resultant labour required of systematists.
