Astraptes obstupefactus sp. nov.

Type locality. Costa Rica, Alajuela Prov. Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, Sector Cacao, Estación Cacao, 10.92691 ° N, 85.46822 ° W, 1150 m .

Diagnosis. The species may be differentiated from other members of the Astraptes fulgerator complex by the following combination of character states of the DNA barcode: 109C; 649T.

Holotype. Voucher 02-SRNP-23035, deposited at the University of Pennsylvania.

Note: This species corresponds to the OTU ‘HIHAMP’ of Hebert et al. (2004). The OTU ‘MYST’ of Hebert et al. (2004) is not separable from A. obstupefactus by the diagnostic features and its exemplars should be considered to belong to that species pending discovery of additional differentiating character states.

Etymology. The name obstupefactus means ‘thunderstruck’. This name seems appropriate for a sibling species of A. fulgerator, whose name means ‘a priest who interprets omens from lightning’.
