Genus Semeloidea Bartrum & Powell, 1928

Type species. Semeloidea donaciformis Bartrum & Powell, 1928

Remarks. Three species of this genus have been recognized in the Cenozoic New Zealand fossil record. These are all ascribed to the nominal subgenus: Semeloidea (Semeloidea) abdiplex (Marwick, 1931) from the Miocene Ihungia Series, North Island; Semeloidea (Semeloidea) donaciformis Bartrum & Powell, 1928, from the Pliocene Kaawa Creek beds, near Port Waikato, North Island ; and Semeloidea (Semeloidea) miocenica Laws, 1932, from the Awamoan (Miocene) Rifle Butts Formation, Oamaru, South Island.

The two subgenera ( Semeloidea Bartrum & Powell, 1928, and Temblornia Keen, 1943) are defined according to features of the hinge teeth, hinge plate and resilium, none of which are available in the two specimens of this study. For this reason, the new species must be assigned to Semeloidea (s. l.). However, all previously reported fossil occurrences of Semeloidea in New Zealand belong to the same subgenus, Semeloidea, which suggests that they probably belong to Semeloidea (s. s.).
