Diagnosis: This exotic species differs from the native species of the Siluriformes by the following combination of characters: body long, latterly flattened with no scales; head relatively small; two pairs of anterior barbels, the upper shorter than the lower; mouth broad with small sharp teeth on jaw, vornerine and palatal bones; eyes relatively large; gill rakers normally developed; fins dark grey or black; dorsal-fin rays 6; and body color uniformly grey but sometimes with greenish tint and sides silvery (juveniles with a black stripe along lateral line and another long black stripe below lateral line).

Basis of the record: A single specimen was collected near the laguna San Sebastian, CaƱo Negro, Alajuela (10.86306, -84.78078), at 41 m. a.s.l., on September 29, 2021, by Bryan Castro and Jader Urbina.

Remarks: This species was recently introduced to the country by government agencies and private entities in an attempt to strengthen aquaculture activities. This species is also used in the aquarium trade.
