Distribution: Endemic to Greece: Peloponnese (WA); Central Greece (WA); Skopelos Island (WA).
Type material: Holotype: male 3.5 mm (voucher NC003), Agioi Theodoroi, Korinthos, Peloponnese, Hellas, 21.04.2004 (leg. C. Fišer & R. Verovnik). Sample was collected in approximately 20 m deep well, Ntakis et al. (2015) . Paratypes: three males of 3.0 mm (voucher NC004), 3.2mm (voucher NC006) and 3.4 mm (voucher NC007), and a female 4 mm (voucher NC005), data same as for holotype, Ntakis et al. (2015). Examined material: female 4 mm G-93= Attica, road Korinthos-Athens, nearly 4 km from Korinthos, well, water temp. 17.4°C, pH 6.9, 17 small exp., 09.04.1978 (leg. Pesce & Maggi) , Karaman G.S. (2018d); males, G-93= Attica, road Korinthos-Athens, nearly 4 km from Korinthos, well, water temp. 17.4°C, pH 6.9, 17 small exp., 09.04.1978 (leg. Pesce & Maggi) , Karaman G.S. (2018d); male 3.9 mm, G-94= Attica, road Korinthos-Athens, Agioi Theodoroi, water temp. 19.9°C; pH 6.9; 6 exp., 09.04.1978 (leg. Pesce & Maggi) (probably topotypic locality) ,, Karaman GS (2018d); one damaged exp. 3.6 mm, G-232= Skopelos island, Panormos (cca 250 m from the sea), 2 wells, water temp. 14.2°C, pH 7.1, 06.07.1980, (leg. G. Pesce) . Holotype and paratype are deposited in DBUL .
Remarks: Small species which is distributed in the central part of mainland Greece, in Peloponnese and Skopelos Island. It belongs to a large monophyletic clade of small species distributed all over the Balkan Peninsula (Fišer et al. 2008; Ntakis et al. 2105; Karaman G.S., 2018d).
Etymology: The species is named in honour of Assistant Professor Spyridon Karkabounas for his contribution to the anti-cancer research.
