Perilla ocymoides Linnaeus, Genera Plantarum, ed. 6: 578. 1764, nom. illeg.

"Habitat in India. Arduini." RCN: 4215.

Replaced synonym: Ocimum frutescens L. (1753) .

Lectotype (Paton in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 74. 1993): [icon] "Ocymum Zeylanicum perenne, odoratissimum, latifolium" in Burman, Thes. Zeylan.: 174, t. 80, f. 1. 1737 (see p. 68).

Generitype of Perilla Linnaeus.

Current name: Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton ( Lamiaceae).

Note: An illegitimate replacement name for Ocimum frutescens L. (1753) and hence homotypic with it. Hedge (in Ali & Nasir, Fl. Pakistan 192: 265. 1990) designated 731.2 (LINN) as the type of O. frutescens but this is an Arduino collection not received by Linnaeus until 1763 and not original material for the name. See notes by Jarvis (in Webbia 48: 497. 1994) on the large number of different taxa included within this name by Linnaeus.
