Plantago afra Linnaeus, Species Plantarum, ed. 2, 1: 168. 1762.
"Habitat in Sicilia, Barbaria." RCN: 944.
Type not designated.
Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 144.31 (LINN); [icon] in Morison, Pl. Hist. Univ. 3: 262, s. 8, t. 17, f. 4. 1699; [icon] in Boccone, Icon. Descr. Rar. Pl. Siciliae: 8, 7, t. 4, f. A. 1674.
Current name: Plantago afra L. ( Plantaginaceae).
Note: Verdcourt (in Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Plantaginaceae: 6. 1971) indicated the cited Morison illustration as a syntype, and suggested that Linnaeus’ reference to North Africa and his description are probably derived from Brander’s specimen from Algiers (144.31, LINN). As a syntype (which is not, by definition, the sole type of a name, unlike a holotype, lectotype or neotype), Verdcourt’s statement is not accepted as correctable to lectotype under Art. 9.8.
