Polypodium vulgare Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1085. 1753.
"Habitat in Europae rimis rupium." RCN: 7865.
Lectotype (Jonsell & Jarvis in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 78. 1993): Herb. Burser XX: 44 (UPS) .
Generitype of Polypodium Linnaeus (vide Cavanilles in Anales Hist. Nat. 1(2): 115. 1799).
Current name: Polypodium vulgare L. ( Polypodiaceae).
Note: Shivas (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 58: 27. 1961) discussed various original elements (illustrating a Clifford sheet as pl. 1), but did not designate a lectotype (although noting that the Burser specimen would "not be inappropriate for the purpose"). He applied the name to the tetraploid cytotype. Jonsell & Jarvis (in Nordic J. Bot. 14: 150. 1994) discussed the reasons for their 1993 type choice.
